If you read Joyce's blog, you already know that our oldest son Andy has been notified that his next PCS (permanent change of station) will be in August. They're headed to Alaska -- Elmendorf AFB. I was curious about Elmendorf so I did a quick web search and found this picture of the control tower.
Looks rather foreboding.

Nah. It won't be so bad. I've worked with some folks from Elmo lately and they're good peeps. The desolation of the winter will be made up for by the company he keeps.
Joyce informs me that Elmendorf and Isengard are not the same.
My bad!
I'm serious. I think Elmendorf is supposed to be beautiful! It does not mean it doesn't look like Isengard during Jan and Feb, but I really don't think the folks I know that work there, went through arm twisting. Its not like Adak. My Dad used to swear that if the world were going to deficate, that's where it would be emitted. Elmendorf doesn't have that reputation.
Ok... go here: http://www.elmendorf.af.mil/photos/index.asp?page=7
First picture on the upper left, Mt. Redoubt (which I believe is our current issue... volanic ash and all that)... very pretty!!! I think he's going to be calling you and Joyce and saying, "You MUST come visit..."
Really!
Thanks, Bou. Actually, we're all thrilled about this move.
If Bob's not convinced, I know I am.
Tell him to make sure he has heavy duty mosquito repellant.
I lived in fear of an Alaskan assignment for about 16 years when I was in the radar biz. I actually had orders to Cape Newenham AFS in 1977 but they were canceled at the last minute because USAF went to contractor (rather than Blue-Suit) maintenance and operations. I was diverted to Fortuna AFS, ND instead. Much the same WX, but Fortuna was in the US, at least. Sorta.
All that said... I've heard mostly good things about Elmendorf. Except for that volcano... ;-)
I thought Elmendorf sounded like something out of Lord of the Rings. Elmendorf or Isengard---same, same!
Joyceee--
Okay, so maybe you did say Elmendorf sounds like one of the places in the "Lord of the Rings" (and I figured it probably wasn't Rivendell). But you did show me those pictures of Elmendorf and then it occurred to me that Isengard must be different.
Forgive me?
